Early Voting in Ohio Begins October 11 - Vote NO on Issue 1

Pro-abortion supporters are bringing a Constitutional Amendment to Ohio, which, for the first time in American history, attempts to create a new human right called the right to "reproductive decisions."

What is Issue 1?

Issue 1 is a Power Grab by the Abortion Industry

The right of reproductive decisions in Issue 1 is actually five specific rights. Abortion is the fifth right. Why are the other four "rights" being placed in the state constitution? The practices of "contraception, fertility treatment, continuing one's own pregnancy and miscarriage care" are not being denied in Ohio today and these services are already being provided by Planned Parenthood, which receives hundreds of millions of dollars in the form of federal and state grant funding for providing them. Why do they appear as new "human rights" in the language of Issue 1?

Because if Issue 1 passes and Planned Parenthood seeks grant funding from the State, the Legislature cannot deny that funding even for abortions (which has been previously prohibited). Thus, Issue 1 would write Planned Parenthood's provision of services into the Constitution with special protections.

"Viability" is Ambiguously Defined

Issue 1 states that abortion "may be prohibited after fetal viability." The amendment declares that "in no case" may an abortion be prohibited if, in the judgment of the treating physician, the abortion is deemed necessary based on the criteria of the patient’s life or health. The meaning of "health" is left wholly undefined.

This means that any law the Legislature attempts to pass protecting a viable unborn child can be disregarded by an abortion provider by simply stating the abortion was necessary for any interpretation of the word "health." The attending physician is given sole authority to determine if the unborn child can survive. The words "reasonable measures" are left wholly undefined and left solely in the subjective authority of the attending abortion provider.

Issue 1 makes the Ohio Legislature powerless to attempt to protect the life of a viable child. Issue 1 transfers the legal authority to determine viability solely to the treating physician.

By failing to explicitly define "viability", and by giving abortionists the final word in determining when a child is viable on a case-by-case basis, Issue 1 leaves the door open for painful, late-term abortions and impose no-limits abortion in Ohio. Issue 1 is not about preserving "choice" or "reproductive freedom" and removes reasonable health and safety protections for women.
